Young Leaders

The Peoria County Farm Bureau Young Leaders invites members and their families 35 years of age or younger to get involved and participate in their programs.

In 2008, the Young Leaders sponsored a bus trip for FFA members to the Chicago Board of Trade and CenterPoint Properties near Joilet. This annual FFA Acquaintance program gives Peoria County FFA chapter members an opportunity to learn about agriculture. It also qualifies FFA students for the Illinois Farm Bureau & Affiliates Youth Leadership Conference in Springfield. In 2008, four Peoria County FFA'ers attended. They were Walter Kirkland, James Maher and Clint Shawhan from the Brimfield FFA Chapter and Shiloh Lueschow who is a member of the Elmwood FFA Chapter.

Young Leaders assisted the Peoria County Corn/Soy Promoters in handing out ethanol pamphlets at a Peoria Rivermen Hockey game during the winter of 2008. Ten Young Leaders gave hockey fans an opportunity to learn about the benefits of clean burning renewable ethanol as they entered the Peoria Civic Center.

For the past three years, the Young Leaders have printed information facts about popcorn, #2 yellow field corn and/or ethanol on popcorn bags. Letters were sent to all of the schools in Peoria County offering them FREE popcorn bags to be used during school activities such as sporting events. In the fall of 2005, 35,000 bags were delivered to 35 schools. In 2006, nearly 60,000 bags were ordered by 48 schools and in 2007, 40,000 bags were delivered to 46 schools in Peoria County.

During the past two years, the Young Leaders have sponsored a Lawnmower Driving Contest during the Peoria County 4-H Show held at Exposition Gardens in Peoria. 4-H'ers maneuver a John Deere lawnmower in between stakes with golf balls balanced on top of the stakes. The challenge gives Young Leaders an opportunity to teach the club members about lawnmower safety and the basics of operating a small tractor.
