On December 2, 2020, native Prairie Forb and Grass Seed was drilled at the Farm Bureau Park. Josh Joseph putting seed in the Type Drill; Vicky Morrical attaching a GoPro Camera to the drill; Jeff Weaver is the tractor driver; and Farm Bureau Park member, Greg Dennis overseas the operation. There is a well diversified seed mix that was purchased from Kelly Seed in Peoria and Hamilton Outpost Native Seed in Missouri.
The plot of native seed that was drilled is approximately 2.5 acres and is divided by grassed walkways into 3 sections. The area is along the Kickapoo-Edwards Blacktop and Smith Road and signs have been posted on the sight “Watch us Grow” and “Pollinators.” Mike McKim, owner of IPRM (Invasive Plant Removal & Maintenance) killed the existing grass this past summer and it was a clean slate of dead thatch to sow the seed.
Peoria County Soil and Water Resource Conservationist Josh Joseph keeps an eye on the native seed that is being drilled. Much of our native grass and forb seed is odd shaped and light in weight which makes it more difficult to be accurately sowed by a traditional grain drill. The 10 foot Tye Drill is equipped with an auger in the bottom of the seed tank and rubber circulating flaps to keep the seed flowing through the drill.
